Toda Huts Ooty Address: Ooty, Tamil Nadu, 643002, India
Ooty has come a long way from being a sleepy little village to an industrially important tier 2 city. But it was not always this bustling town with immigrants from all over South India, which you see now. In fact, Ooty did not exist on the map until about two centuries ago.
Even before the immigration began from other parts of the country, there lived the indigenous tribes of the Western Ghats who inhabited Ooty and the surrounding areas. They live in these areas till date and form a formidable part of the local population. The main among these local tribes are the Todas. They are mainly pastoral people who live by cattle herding and a bit of farming.
Toda Village is located about 15 kms away from Ooty and should not be missed during your Ooty Tour. You can visit the village and learn about the culture, food, clothes, and a lot more about their community. You can also visit the Toda temple which is similar in appearance to the traditional Toda huts, and is restricted to men only.

The Todas live in small closely knit communities, one community mainly formed by people who are related to each other. There are very few chances of finding more than ten huts in a single Toda community. Of these one hut is exclusively for the cattle while a second one is meant for storage. The people inhabit the rest of the huts.
Toda huts are curious structures, usually without any windows and in a semi barrel shape. You have to stoop inside the hut but can manage to stand upright once inside. Toda life revolves around their cattle since dairy farming and dairy products are their main if not the only source of livelihood. Deeply religious, the Toda population is dwindling in numbers mainly due to the outward migration of the later generations in search of better livelihood.
